Burway Bridge

Wednesday, 4 March 2009

This contract for Shropshire County Council was to undertake the reconstruction of Burway Bridge which had collapsed during the floods of June 2007, a temporary bridge had been erected in August 2007 under traffic light control.

Phase 1 of the works involved removal of the temporary bridge structure, placement of 800 tonnes of block stone to fill the void left by the floods of 2007, the installation of 84 number CFA piles to a depth of 12 metres, the construction of reinforced concrete bridge abutments together with reinforced concrete wing walls covered in locally sourced stone.

On completion of the bridge foundation works rubber bearing pads were placed in position to receive 15 precast concrete beams 22 metres long and weighing 25 tonnes each, on completion of the bridge beams a reinforced concrete deck and parapets  were constructed so that the temporary services diverted during the floods of 2007 could be placed in their permanent position.

Phase 1 of the works was completed 65 days ahead of schedule allowing the carriageway and footpaths to be open under traffic control in time for the Ludlow Food festival.

Phase 2 of the works involved the diversion of utility services, completion of carriageway, footpath works, river bank protection works, landscaping of flood plain, accommodation works to local properties, drainage works and masonry works and resulted in a grand opening ceremony involving local residents and dignitaries together with members of the County Council.
