Growing careers through skills development

Ask any keen gardener and they will tell you; successful growing is down to a number of elements – preparation, positioning, review and provision, mixed with a large slice of hard work and in some cases a bit of luck.

As with gardening, the same principles apply to nurturing careers. Once your desired role has been identified, you must find the right person, feed their potential by using the tools you have developed and allow them to flourish within your organisation.

Successful businesses understand that they are nothing without people. McPhillips has always placed the utmost importance on finding the right people and providing an environment which knows no bounds to achievement. To keep pace with the ever changing construction landscape, we refresh and remodel the varied skill sets that make up our modern civil engineering and building teams.

The McPhillips Training Centre was opened at our Telford HQ in 1999. This purpose-built facility is used to host a variety of courses and provides a great learning environment for our staff to develop their careers. The result is a motivated and highly skilled workforce with retention levels far in excess of construction industry averages.

Our fully licensed CITB / CPCS registered status for training in many items of plant categories with the support of our training partner SLL Plant & Quarry Training Services Ltd, provides in excess of 1000 training days annually. Our Plant Training Area, situated opposite our HQ, is set out in designated zones to comply with required square metre areas for CPCS training and testing in many types of construction plant. Including but not exclusively, CPCS Category A09 Forward Tipping Dumper, A41 Loader Compressor, A31 Ride On Roller, A10 & A12 180 Excavator and A58 & A59 360 Excavator.

Stuart Bishop, McPhillips’ SHEQ Manager, commented… “The training of people has always been an important aspect of what sets McPhillips apart. Along with many others, I too have benefitted from investment in my development, at every stage of my twelve years with McPhillips. We are excellent at assessing the future needs of the company and highlighting the skills to meet those needs. Above all, we develop our people to ensure as we grow so do they.”
