As part of Women in Construction Week and National Careers Week, McPhillips is proud to showcase how it is helping to nurture talent and create pathways into the construction industry.
One such example is Jasmine Reason (18), a student from Dudley College who is currently studying for a T-Level in quantity surveying and doing her work placement with McPhillips.
“I’ve learnt so much in my time with the company already,” says Jasmine, who has been gaining valuable experience across two diverse McPhillips projects – the Worcester Street regeneration scheme in Kidderminster and the Dudley Road improvement scheme in Birmingham.
Despite friends suggesting careers in beauty or hairdressing, Jasmine had her sights set on becoming a quantity surveyor from the age of 14.
“Maths has always been my thing,” she said
“That’s what has always drawn me to the idea of working in construction and surveying. I get to use those mathematical skills every day and each working day is totally different.”
The placement has proven so successful that McPhillips has already offered Jasmine a part-time position to begin after her college course finishes in June.
The arrangement will allow her to continue her studies three days a week while working with McPhillips for the remaining two days.
“The team is super supportive, and everyone is keen to teach and show you what they are doing,” she added.
“Being hands-on at the sites with all these experienced people has taught me so much.”
Jasmine is one of seven T-Level students currently on placement with McPhillips and as a company it is keen to see more women working across the industry.
Stuart Bishop, SHEQ manager at McPhillips, oversees the company’s training and development programmes.
He said: “Jasmine exemplifies everything we look for in our trainees at McPhillips.
“Her enthusiasm, mathematical aptitude and willingness to learn across different project environments make her a leading example to other young women interested in construction careers.
“We’re committed to investing in training programmes that create pathways into our industry, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see talented individuals like Jasmine flourish during their time with us.”
As well as the T-Level programme, McPhillips also runs a successful apprenticeship scheme.
