Students tour £10 million transport hub’s construction site

Students from Kingstone High School in Hereford were given an insight into construction of the town’s new £10 million transport hub.

The Year 10 students saw first-hand the transformative project being delivered by Telford construction firm McPhillips on behalf of Herefordshire Council.

As part of its commitment to support local communities where it works, and through its partnership with The Marches Careers Hub, McPhillips social value coordinator Emily Myatt and stakeholder manager Matt Link delivered a careers in construction presentation and site safety simulation activity to pupils.

As a follow up, students interested in a career in construction were invited for a tour of the Hereford Transport Hub site.

The seven students were kitted out in PPE and site manager Richard Flanigan took them behind the scenes, answering questions along the way.

Matt Link said: “After giving them all a site induction and stressing the importance of site safety, we told them a little bit about the project and the wide variety of job opportunities that a career in construction can offer.

“They seemed really interested and I think when the Transport Hub is complete, they’ll look back on this visit with a real insight into the work involved in construction projects.”

Careers adviser at Kingstone Academy Trust Charlene Husband, said: “This opportunity provided our students with a valuable experience of a real-world construction setting, gaining greater knowledge of the different careers within the construction sector.

“Our students are currently studying construction, maths, science and some study DT, and the experience helped to bring these subjects to life as they were able to see how these are applied in practice.  Students learned about the importance of teamwork, problem solving and communication, and we hope it reinforced the key employability skills that form part of our curriculum.

“We are very grateful to McPhillips for providing this activity for our students as it helped to underpin their awareness of pathways into construction, progression routes within the industry and will help support them to make informed decisions about their next steps after Kingstone High School.”

McPhillips started work on the multi-million transport hub last August, and it is set to link buses, trains and taxis making it easier for people to navigate their way around the city. Also provided will be indoor welfare facilities for passengers and covered cycle facilities to encourage commuter cycle parking.

The development forms part of the wider ‘Improving Transport in Hereford’ scheme and is being supported by government Levelling Up funding.
