Health & Safety

McPhillips (Wellington) Limited is compliant with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognises that exemplary performance is achieved through the integration of health and safety in its organisational culture.

The company has developed a zero accident strategy which is fully supported by the board and ensures that effective health and safety systems are an intrinsic part of company operations. Implementation is achieved through the use of the McPhillips health and safety policy and ISO45001:2018 certified safety management system which forms a key component of the integrated safety, health, environmental and quality management system. This strategy has enabled McPhillips to achieve average accident incident rates of less than half the UK national average for construction contractors between 2012-2022.

McPhillips’ SHEQ Manager is responsible for the operation and development of the strategy and its constant review using processes and historical analysis to consult with our operational personnel and industry best practice sources aimed at year on year improvement.

The direct employment of McPhillips’ workforce makes this strategy more effective and a CITB approved training plan delivers in excess of 1000 training days annually. All McPhillips site managers and foremen hold site manager’s/supervisor’s safety training scheme certificates, 100% of our machine operators hold CPCS cards and 100% of the workforce is CSCS certified, predominantly via the NVQ route.

ISO9001:2015 certified supply chain approval and assessment processes ensure that effective health and safety is maintained across all activities.

McPhillips champions good health and safety practice throughout the construction industry and is an active member of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association, Midlands Civil Engineering Training Group, Shropshire Construction Training Group, Birmingham Health Safety and Environment Association and the Staffordshire and Shropshire HSE Working Well Together Group. McPhillips is a member of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and has received Gold Awards or higher annually since 1999 with Orders of Distinction achieved in 2022 and 2023.
