McPhillips is in the mix for yet another accolade – having been chosen as a finalist in the Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Apprenticeship Awards.
On the back of being named Shropshire Community Champion at the recent Shropshire Chamber Business Awards, we have made it onto the shortlist for the large employer of the year.
The nomination underlines our decades-long commitment to supporting apprentices across the region – having first started taking them on back in 1995.
Since then, the McPhillips Apprenticeship Scheme has produced more than 150 graduates, with ex-apprentices now making up 20 per cent of our 240-strong work force.
Managing director Paul Inions said: “Training up the next generation of construction workers through our dedicated apprenticeship scheme is what our company is all about and we’re pleased to have made the award shortlist.
“The scheme futureproofs the long-term sustainability of the business and the sector and brings so many benefits with it, not just for us and our staff, but for the wider economy in the region.”
McPhillips delivers its two-year apprenticeship scheme alongside Telford College, providing comprehensive training across health and safety, plant operation, road construction and specialist skills.
Our track record of producing talented apprentices stretches back more than three decades, with many going on to progress into senior positions.
Former apprentice Matt Lowerson joined as one of the first cohorts at 16, spending more than 30 years with the company before progressing to site foreman.
Matt said: “You can’t do any better in the construction industry than completing an apprenticeship with McPhillips.
“They teach you everything you need and more, to ensure you are one of the best skilled and qualified construction workers on any site.”
A handful of apprentices have gone on to win accolades, including Kai Ginifer, who was named Most Promising Apprentice 2025 at the CECA West Midlands Awards and Luke Courtnell was named the 2024 Construction Apprentice of the Year at the inaugural Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Apprenticeship Awards (STWAA).
More recently, McPhillips became a Marches Careers Hub Cornerstone Employer, reinforcing its commitment to developing local talent and strengthening the link between education and industry.
