Construction firm McPhillips has completed work on the first phase of a new £20m integrated retirement community in Newport.
The award-winning firm began work in autumn 2024 on Sundew Court, a multi-million pound IRC, developed for specialists Untold Living.
The purpose-built independent retirement community which features the Onsite Happy Quail restaurant and bar, library, hairdressing salon, a multi-function room, communal areas and around 40 apartments has now been handed over to Untold.
Work continues on a second block of apartments and the final set of bungalows, with the site to comprise 16 bungalows in total.
McPhillips director Chris Walker said the handover marked a significant moment in a project that was delivering high-quality housing and addressing the growing demand for later living accommodation.
He said: “Handing over the first phase of Sundew Court is a proud moment for our team and a milestone for Newport.
“There is a national shortage of good-quality homes for older people and we won’t close that gap by building the way we always have. Using Modern Methods of Construction on this project has allowed us to build faster, with less waste and less disruption for neighbours, without compromising on quality. Sundew Court really shows what can be achieved across the later living housing sector
“Every home here gives someone a better choice for later life and frees up a larger home for a family in the town. We look forward to completing the rest of the site.”
Untold Living staff are now preparing for the first residents to move in next month – and Sundew Court general manager, Adrian Pickard, said: “The team at McPhillips has done a brilliant job of bringing the first phase of Sundew Court to life and we’re grateful for everything they’ve put into it.
“Handing over the keys is when a building becomes a community. Our first residents move in next month and we’re looking forward to welcoming them, helping them settle in and seeing friendships form over a meal in the restaurant or a drink in the bar.
“We want Sundew Court to be part of everyday life in Newport, with local people, groups and businesses joining us as the community grows. This is just the start.”
