McPhillips was principal contractor for Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council on a new road bridge over the Wyrley & Essington Canal, with associated carriageway improvements along Norton Road in Pelsall. The scheme delivered a new 40-metre, two-way bridge with dedicated pedestrian access, improved visibility, enhanced lighting, revised access to nearby properties and the Fingerpost pub, and parking bays for users of the adjacent common land.
The original single-lane humpback brick arch bridge — dating to the mid-1800s and sitting alongside a Site of Special Scientific Interest — had become unsuitable for modern traffic volumes, but remains in place for pedestrian and private access.
We're proud of what we have delivered here and of the relationships we built with Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council, the Canal & River Trust and the local community. The new bridge is a real and lasting improvement for Pelsall and we hope residents and road users enjoy the benefits for many years to come.”
