This project followed McPhillips' completion of an earlier package of works to key road junctions in Shrewsbury. Delivered on an NEC Option B contract, it improved pedestrian and public realm facilities at three sites in Shrewsbury town centre — Murivance, Claremont Bank and Town Walls/Belmont. Significant additional work in Pride Hill was also instructed mid-project.
The work at Murivance, near Shrewsbury High School, involved narrowing 40m of the existing carriageway and replacing the footway paving with 75mm Yorkstone slabs on a concrete sub-base, with Yorkstone setts and tactile flags at uncontrolled crossing points. New LED lighting columns and road signs were installed and the carriageway resurfaced.
The Claremont Bank and St Chad's Terrace phase was the largest section, requiring kerb re-alignments to narrow the two-way carriageway to a one-way route with wider footways. Yorkstone and Chinese granite flags, setts and kerbs were combined in the new footways, new carrier drains and gullies were constructed and a Toucan crossing installed, alongside LED lighting, new tree pits, street furniture, signage and road markings. At Town Walls and Belmont, the carriageway was planed and resurfaced while new Yorkstone flags, setts and kerbs replaced the existing concrete paving.
In the pedestrianised Pride Hill retail area, working in isolated areas no larger than 40m and maintaining pedestrian routes throughout, McPhillips removed the old red concrete paviours and replaced them with natural sandstone slabs to shop frontages and a five-colour granite sett mix to the central delivery route. New slot drainage was installed, shopfront lanterns were replaced with in-keeping LED lighting plus three new columns, and the street scene was completed with litter bins, stainless-steel cycle stands, bespoke seating and planters.
