McPhillips was appointed as principal contractor to refurbish Porthill Bridge for Shropshire Council on an NEC Option B contract in March 2012. The bridge is a main pedestrian route across the River Severn in Shrewsbury town centre.
The existing steel structure dates from the 1920s and had last been refurbished in the 1980s. It comprises a 40m suspended span over the river with an approach span at each end — the river span carried on four main cables with vertical steel suspenders, supported on steel lattice towers at both banks, and a timber deck carried on lattice girders and steel transoms.
