Award winning firm McPhillips has become the latest company in Shropshire to put their signature to the Care Leavers Covenant.
The construction and civil engineering firm from Wellington, has pledged its support to the nationwide Government backed scheme, which is run by the Department of Education.
The covenant aims to support young care leavers with work experience placements, internships, apprenticeships and career opportunities.
Managing director Paul Inions explained that signing up to the covenant underlines McPhillips’ commitment to offering young people a chance to thrive.
He said: “At McPhillips, we pride ourselves on providing apprenticeships to those who need them most. That is why we have signed the Care Leaver Covenant, to strengthen our commitment to supporting care leavers and offering them the opportunity to learn valuable skills whilst earning an income.
“We’re proud of the fact that more than 20 per cent of our current workforce are graduates of our apprenticeship scheme.
“They are a brilliant avenue to give young people a great start in working life, and signing the Care Leavers Covenant will help to provide this scheme to a wider audience and enable further opportunities for care leavers.”
So far the company, which has a 240 strong directly employed work force, has already taken on two care leavers with one still employed as a general labourer.
The apprenticeship involves on the job training and practical experience, mentoring from experienced team members and opportunities to take on more responsibilities.
The apprenticeships are in civil engineering, construction and site operations, construction trades and plant operations, quantity surveying and business administration.
Across the UK, the covenant works with more than 760 organisations to provide opportunities to care leavers.
