Work starts on latest phase of Dudley Road improvement scheme

Award-winning civil engineering and building contractor McPhillips has started work on the latest phase of Birmingham City Council’s A457 Dudley Road improvement scheme.

Phase 4 will deliver a protected cycle route, separate from cars and pedestrians, extending the existing segregated cycle lane. It will run along the front of the former City Hospital and Birmingham Treatment Centre, between Aberdeen Street and Western Road.

The work represents the culmination of a multi-million-pound investment by Birmingham City Council to improve network capacity, enhance public transport facilities and upgrade pedestrian and cycling infrastructure along the A457 corridor in the Greater Icknield area.

Andrew Dunham, director at McPhillips, said: “Phase 4 of the Dudley Road improvement scheme is the final piece in the multi-million-pound investment by Birmingham City Council to bring safer roads and an enhanced transport network to the area.

“At McPhillips we have built our reputation on collaborative working whilst delivering transformative change, and we are delighted to again be BCC’s partner of choice in this important and ambitious scheme.”

The scheme demonstrates McPhillips’ expertise in delivering complex highways and infrastructure projects as well as a commitment to sustainable solutions. Having successfully delivered the previous three phases, the Telford headquartered construction firm has established a strong partnership with Birmingham City Council based on collaborative working and a commitment to delivering excellence.

The project supports the council’s longer-term priorities of sustainable transport and net zero carbon ambitions.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The scheme will deliver significant improvements in network capacity and public transport, in addition to upgraded facilities for pedestrians and cyclists along the A457 corridor.

“It will make our roads safer and contribute towards our longer-term priorities of sustainable transport and net zero carbon ambitions.

“This work shows how we can work together with our public and private sector partners.”

This latest phase follows the successful completion of Phase 2 in August 2024, which delivered tidal flow bus lanes, new segregated cycle lanes, footway and pedestrian crossing upgrades across the Spring Hill, Barford Estate and Heath Street/Winson Green Road sections.
