DOGS TRUST REHOMING CENTRE, CARDIFF

McPhillips’ Dogs Trust Cardiff project was a new build rehoming centre delivered on a brown field site in the Bay area of Cardiff.

Four buildings were delivered totalling over 4300m2 of internal floor area and providing 78 kennels.

The two storey rehoming building is 2521m2 and contains the reception and public areas, administration offices, 24 kennels, training hall, hydro-therapy and vet suite.  Construction used a steel portal frame with SFS infill, fibre cement panel system and a built-up system roof.  Building comfort is controlled using a BMS with mechanical ventilation and air conditioning.

A separate single storey stray building of 942m2 is equipped with 34 kennels and solar PV panels to the roof with a further 20 kennels in the 707m2 booked building.  The site is completed by a 132m2 maintenance building.

Externally tarmac public and overflow car parks were provided and rainwater is collected and stored using a grey water harvesting system to be used to meet the centre’s operational needs.

Dog runs and play areas were constructed along with footpaths through a planted wooded area.
