McPhillips breaks ground on new £10 million Hereford transport hub

Construction of a new £10 million transport hub which will transform the way people move around Hereford has started.

McPhillips, which was awarded the multi-million contract earlier this year, met on site with officials from Herefordshire Council and Network Rail for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the project.

The hub will link buses, trains and taxis making it easier for people to navigate their way around the city.

The development forms part of the wider ‘Improving Transport in Hereford’ scheme and it is being supported by government Levelling Up funding.

Andrew Dunham, contracts director for McPhillips, said: “This £10 million investment represents far more than just a construction project – it’s a genuine investment in the future of Hereford and its community.

“The new hub will transform how people move around the city, providing modern bus facilities, improved parking, covered cycle storage, and indoor welfare facilities that will encourage a shift towards more sustainable transport options.

“At McPhillips, we’ve built our reputation over six decades on delivering transformative public realm and transport projects. We know from experience how these spaces can genuinely transform communities, improving connectivity whilst reducing congestion and enhancing air quality.

“What makes this project particularly special for us is our commitment to supporting local supply chains throughout the delivery.

“Our approach ensures that the economic benefits of this investment flow directly into the local community – from local suppliers to local skilled workers.”

Councillor Philip Price, cabinet member for transport and infrastructure, said he was pleased to see work starting on the project.

“Once complete, the hub will provide accessible, safe and green transport connections, boosting health and wellbeing, reducing congestion and improving air quality,” he said.

“We look forward to working with McPhillips Wellington Ltd to deliver a modern and truly outstanding Hub for Hereford.”
