Digger driver steps down after 31 years

A larger-than-life McPhillips character with a career spanning more than three decades has finally called it a day.

Machine operator Keith Tipton, who has been helping build communities across Shropshire since joining McPhillips in June 1995, retired on July 1, the day before his 66th birthday.

After stepping down from his digger for the final time, Keith travelled to head office where he met with directors Paul Inions, Andrew Dunham and Stuart Mackenzie who presented him with vouchers as a token of their appreciation.

Andrew Dunham said: “Though we will really miss having such a big character as Keith around, we wish him well in his retirement.”

Keith, known to colleagues as Weapon, said his 31 years with McPhillips had been a great career: “If I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t have stayed!”

But when asked about the highlight of his career, he said there were simply too many tales to mention.

And his immediate plans following retirement? “I’m going to have a lie in,” he said.

Wishing you all the best Keith, here’s to a happy retirement.
