Newport retirement development progress tour for partners
Diary entry two: June 2025
An onsite progress visit was held last week at the £20 million retirement community being delivered in Newport by leading construction firm McPhillips.
Representatives from developer partners Untold Living, Matter Real Estate and OakNorth Bank were on site, along with those from Gaunt Francis Architects and Total Project Integration.
The development of 61 apartments and 15 bungalows will provide supportive age-appropriate housing in Newport, offering homes for purchase or rent, along with optional 24-hour on-site care that residents can access as needed. The first residents are expected to move in by mid-2026.
During the visit, small groups were given informative and guided tours of the site by contracts manager Carl Ayling and project manager Darren Lewis watched over by the giant crane that is in place ready to begin installation of pre-manufactured steel frame panels and walls.
By deploying Modern Methods of Construction, McPhillips has been able to accelerate the build programme, minimise disruption on site, all the time while achieving a high standard of workmanship.
A social afternoon followed the formal part of the day, team building with an escape room experience at Shrewsbury Prison and drinks at The Riverbank.
Carl said: “It was an extremely positive visit in which we were able to showcase the foundations and infrastructure that is in place ready for the next exciting part of the project. Once they’re in place, we’ll see the apartment blocks shooting up in no time.”
