The improvements to Limekiln Island were undertaken as part of the package of works funded by Telford & Wrekin Council's Growth Deal, intended to increase capacity on a number of key routes in and around Telford. This was achieved through the creation of a third lane on all four approach carriageways and on the island itself.
These works took place concurrently with a similar scheme at another important island on Telford's strategic road network (Shawbirch Island), and the combined impact of both schemes was considered in the temporary traffic management strategy. McPhillips' activities consisted of altering existing kerb lines and reconfiguring four traffic splitter islands/pedestrian refuges, involving: 600m of new kerb drainage along with 400m of PCC kerb; 300m of 150mm–750mm diameter pipe drainage; 30 new street lighting columns and 1,200m² of tarmac footway with new signage; a new toucan crossing on Telford Way; 3,700m² of full-depth 540mm carriageway reconstruction along with 11,000m² of replacement surface course; and 100m of pedestrian guardrail alongside 400m of post-and-rail fencing.
Working hours were restricted to daytime only, other than final surfacing which took place overnight to reduce disruption.
