Apprentices

McPhillips is proud to invest in its local community, reduce skills shortages and help to sustain the future of the construction industry through the operation of its in-house apprenticeship scheme.

McPhillips’ apprentices receive a solid grounding in a valuable skill set required in their working roles. They are then able to put these skills into practice, gaining maximum benefit from a combination of education and practical application.

The scheme operates as a two year sandwich course at Telford College and alternates with periods on-site applying knowledge and gaining valuable experience. The comprehensive training encompasses:

  • Health and safety
  • First aid
  • Confined spaces
  • Plant operation
  • Brick laying
  • Road construction
  • Block paving
  • Kerb laying
  • Pipe laying

On completion attendees receive safety and plant operation qualifications in the form of CSCS and CPCS cards along with an NVQ Level 2 and NRSWA qualification. This ensures they are able to work safely and produce the highest levels of workmanship.

McPhillips sees great benefits from its investment in people and is proud of the fact that over 20% of its current workforce are graduates of the scheme. “This training scheme gives these young people a great start in life. With their qualifications they can work on any construction site in the country.” said Paul Inions, Managing Director.

One of McPhillips’ first apprentices is Matt Lowerson who joined McPhillips after leaving school at 16, commenting on the scheme Matt said “You can’t do any better in the construction industry than completing an apprenticeship with McPhillips. They teach you everything you need and more, to ensure you are one of the best skilled and qualified construction workers on any site in the UK.”
