McPhillips designed and built this waste transfer and recycling centre for Tudor Griffiths Group at Ellesmere. The design and construction process was managed from outline planning onwards and McPhillips handed over a turn key solution to the client. This included gaining all necessary permissions on behalf of the client including the waste operators licence, detailed planning which involved conditions to the outline design, building regs approval, section 278 approval from Shropshire Council and Environment Agency consents including those for discharge and lechates.

The waste reception and sorting building is 2160m2 and measures 12m to eaves. The 6m high internal concrete push walls are independent of the steel frame so that the integrity of the building is not compromised by activities within. We produced a unique contractor designed jointless floor slab using an abrasion resistant micro silica concrete and incorporating magnesium coated railway lines to allow bladed machines to shovel waste without damaging the floor. We increased the roof lights from 10% to 15% and specified galvanized steel for the portal frame. Under our appointment a Process subcontractor provided the waste handling equipment, CCTV and odour & dust suppression equipment. Leachate containment was provided by the installation of two 3000 gallon underground tanks and associated drainage and we also created a 4000m2 external concrete hardstanding.
