McPhillips undertook the project to refurbish an existing 710m2 derelict sports hall into a new Construction Training Centre on TCAT’s Telford campus which was designed to achieve BREEAM Very Good (Education 2008). The original building was of steel frame and blockwork construction and has been entirely reskinned using facing brick and cladding taken from the palette of materials used previously on the College Campus with new wall insulation. New surface water and foul drainage has been installed and a new aluminium standing seam roof has been constructed along with a replacement insulated floor slab. A new glazed entrance and reception area has been provided along with a new mezzanine floor accessed by a metal staircase and goods lift. 15 IT pods have been provided and the entire building is flood wired in CAT6 cable served by a new air-conditioned IT hub. Two air-conditioned classrooms have been built along with a staff office, student social area, workshop and internal store. Completely new mechanical and electrical infrastructure was provided including both internal and external CCTV monitoring. Externally the immediate surrounds have been laid to tarmac with minor landscaping beyond. The works were completed within programme and took place largely during the summer period when the College was at reduced capacity to minimise disruption.
