Client: Marches Care Limited

Value: £4,400,000

Programme: 48 weeks

Completion Date: May 2007

Marches Care Limited asked McPhillips Design and Build to construct a new 80 bed care facility in Shrewsbury, Shropshire after we were successful with the initial two stage tender.  Once appointed as preferred bidder we worked closely with the client in order to produce a design which fulfilled all of their aspirations and provided above average floor areas per bed and exceptional finishes.  The contract was then undertaken on a target price basis.

The site was initially a greenfield and we undertook the site clearance works followed by installation of the reinforced concrete foundations.  Our design used a timber frame and blockwork walls with a composite roof to produce a 3600m2 building over two storeys.  Externally we made extensive use of cedar cladding and rendering to provide an attractive appearance.  The robust detailing was closely monitored throughout in order to achieve an air leakage test result of 2.68m3/hr/m2.  Internally we provided 80 high specification bedrooms with communal areas, kitchens etc.  High quality finishes provide an exceptional residential experience and ensure that the home provides an inviting atmosphere to prospective residents and visitors.

Sustainability was a key consideration of the brief and all timber was procured from entirely sustainable sources in line with our responsible procurement policy.  Other features included:

  • Grey water harvesting for sanitation and fire suppression
  • Biomass boiler for heating and domestic hot water via wet system
  • Warm Cell recycled paper cavity insulation
The outstanding quality and sustainability features led to the project becoming a finalist at the Pinder Health Care Awards.
