McPhillips has been awarded the contract to build Champions Church at Cinderbank, Netherton in Dudley. The £1.9m project is due for completion in 2010.
The first phase involves building a 1,300 sq m worship space, a semi-circular, double storey, 14-tiered row auditorium for 850 people and a “walk-through” baptism pool built under the stage.
The 600 sq m ground floor and 700 sq m first floor space with a 40 m roof span will include a glass entrance hall, restaurant, coffee bar, bookshop, film editing suite for TV broadcasts, meeting rooms, choir rooms, lounge, offices, stores, disabled facilities and a baby changing room.
McPhillips Managing Director Peter McPhillips said: “We have built many different types of construction over the past 45 years but I must admit this is the first ever church we have been asked to build.
“Work on the first phase has just started to build the worship space and baptism pool, entrance area and some external works.”
Vibro piled holes will be drilled to a depth of 8 m and the steel framed building clad in block work and steel cladding with concrete tiered seating and staircases.
Interior sound proofing, a sound system and lighting and soft furnishings will complete the development along with a new access off the A459.
